The Quiet Victories Nobody Sees

Why your hidden battles matter more than you think

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:34-37

"But David said to Saul, 'Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.'"

The Battle Nobody Saw

David was a shepherd.

Not a soldier. Not a warrior. Not a giant-slayer.

Just a boy with a staff and a sling, watching sheep in the middle of nowhere.

While his brothers were on the front lines, David was in the back fields. While others were fighting for glory, David was fighting for sheep. Dirty sheep. Stubborn sheep. The kind that wander off and get themselves into trouble.

One day, a lion came.

Not a metaphor. A real lion. Teeth. Claws. Hunger.

And David didn't run. He didn't call for backup. He didn't wait for someone else to handle it.

He went after it. Grabbed it. Killed it.

Nobody saw that.

No crowd cheered. No one wrote a song about it. No Instagram post. No certificate of achievement.

Just a boy, a lion, and a God who was watching.

The Lion Before the Giant

Here's what you need to understand.

David didn't find courage on the battlefield. He arrived with it.

When Goliath showed up—nine feet tall, covered in armor, screaming curses—David didn't suddenly become brave. He had been brave for years. Alone. In secret. When no one was looking.

The shepherd who killed a lion in private was the same shepherd who killed a giant in public.

The victory was the same.

The difference was the audience.

What Are Your Lions?

You have your own lions.

Not literal ones. But battles nobody sees.

The discipline to wake up early and pray when you'd rather sleep.

The patience to stay calm when your children are pushing every button.

The honesty to tell the truth when a lie would be easier.

The courage to forgive when every fiber of your being wants to hold onto the hurt.

The self-control to not lose your temper with that difficult coworker.

The faithfulness to keep showing up to a job that drains you because you're providing for your family.

Nobody applauds these.

Nobody sees them.

But God does.

The World Only Sees the Giants

Here's the problem with how we think.

We celebrate the public victories. The promotions. The breakthroughs. The moments when everything clicks.

But we forget that public victories are built on private ones.

The pastor who preaches with power? He spent hours in prayer. Alone. When nobody was watching.

The marriage that stands strong? They chose patience and forgiveness. In the kitchen. In the bedroom. During countless ordinary days.

The business that succeeds? They were disciplined when nobody was watching. They made the hard choices when no one was there to cheer.

The giant is loud. The lions are quiet.

But the lions are what prepare you for the giant.

Ruth: Faithfulness in the Fields

Another example.

Ruth was a widow. Foreigner. Poor. Grieving.

She could have complained. She could have blamed God. She could have gone back to her own people.

Instead, she went to work. Gleaning in the fields. Picking up leftover grain. Day after day. Hot sun. Dirty hands. Tired body.

Nobody saw her as a hero. She was just a widow trying to survive.

But God saw.

And her quiet faithfulness—her willingness to serve her mother-in-law, to work hard, to keep going when it would have been easier to give up—led to something extraordinary.

She became the great-grandmother of David.

And eventually, she is named in the lineage of Jesus.

Her quiet victory in the fields led to a legacy she could never have imagined.

Noah: Obedience Without Applause

One more.

Noah built an ark.

For years. Decades. In a place where it had never rained.

People mocked him. They thought he was crazy. They laughed at his project, his faith, his God.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody said "well done."

Nobody even helped.

But Noah kept building. One plank at a time. One day at a time. Faithful when nobody saw.

And when the flood came, his hidden obedience became the salvation of the world.

The Deception of Applause

We love applause.

We love the feeling of being seen, celebrated, recognized.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

But there's something dangerous about it too.

When we chase applause, we start to value visible victories over invisible ones.

We start to care more about what people see than what God sees.

We start to perform instead of being faithful.

Jesus warned about this. He said: "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them" (Matthew 6:1).

He was talking about prayer, giving, fasting.

He was saying: your private victories matter more than your public ones.

Because the God who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Your Hidden Battle Matters

So here's what I want to tell you.

That battle you're fighting alone? It matters.

That decision to stay faithful when nobody sees? It matters.

That prayer you prayed when you felt like giving up? It matters.

That kindness you showed when no one was looking? It matters.

You may never see the full impact of your quiet victories.

But God does.

And one day, in a way you can't imagine, He will use them.

He will take your private victories and use them for public purposes.

He will take your hidden faithfulness and make it your open testimony.

He will take your lion and use it to prepare you for your giant.

A Prayer for the Quiet Warriors

Father,

I confess that I sometimes chase applause more than I chase You.

I want to be seen. Celebrated. Recognized.

But I know that You see what others miss. You see the battles I fight alone. You see the faithfulness when nobody's watching.

Give me the courage of David. The quiet persistence of Ruth. The unwavering obedience of Noah.

Help me to be faithful in the hidden places.

And when my giant comes—and it will come—let me face it with the confidence that comes from victories already won in secret.
